Democrats in America are scratching their heads over Trump’s victory in the recent presidential election. Soul searching is going on, as to how they lost this contest. Democratic elections are popularity contests. They are part evaluations, part bribery, and mirrors held up to societies. Op eds are being written about the role of working class America in the outcome. Chasing this vote is problematic in my view. Why appealing to white working class folk is a race to the bottom? Demagogues, like Donald Trump, falsely court this vote and pretend to champion their grievances. Trump did not deliver for them the first time around and will not again. It is a cynical game and losers always lose out in the end.Continue Reading

Big Ears Had To Bow Out From Noddy: The Woke Conspiracy.

‘If you don’t know, vote No!’ This tag line from the recent Voice referendum captures succinctly the political stratagem of the conservative right. Turning ignorance and indifference into celebrated public virtues in a bid to capture the vote of the dominant white cohort. The sustained attack on all things ‘woke’ is part and parcel of this 21C campaign. Identifying examples of woke in workplaces and public life have been vote winners for socially conservative candidates and parties. I remember it began with things like the apparent banning of racially offensive terminology from children’s books. Niggers and gollywogs were the first to get the chop. White folk were upset about the removal and amendments of characters and aspects from much loved stories from their childhoods. Big Ears had to bow out from Noddy: The woke conspiracy. Roald Dahl stories were full of inappropriate and politically incorrect characters and terminology. There was this air of ‘how dare they!’ The majority white view was – can’t these people take a joke. Of course, this is the problem in a nutshell, because unless you are in the shoes of those being racially slurred you have no idea what it feels like.Continue Reading

#UNGA President Donald J. Trump

America is the great democratic experiment. Although, this is getting on for some 250 years now. This nation is in the grip of the politics of grievance. Partisan politics in America is more about hating the other side than particularly loving the side you are voting for. Americans have been encouraged to focus their attention upon their grievances via decades of negative campaigning and attack ads. Demonizing ‘the other’ is the favoured political pastime in the 21C. Identity politics and social values are the main game these days. Economic issues are now seen through this ideological filter.Continue Reading

woman sitting on the floor with her hands on head

What a refreshing movie. The Woman King is wonderful stuff. I found myself cheering for the women and the Africans, as they won their battles against their male and European foes. History has often been depressing in its relentless exploitation of the noble savage and the female of the species. Watching a film where these folk finally get the upper hand was a welcome thrill. The depiction of the slave trade in Africa was a reminder of the horrendous role Europeans played in making their fortune in this manner. All too many of us, white, well fed Westerners put this stuff out of our thoughts, when it was really not that long ago.Continue Reading

man wearing a hat holding a placard with a text stay woke

If you’re old and you’re white. If you’re none too bright. Don’t fall for the woke-con. If you’re a bloke and you’re tough. If you’ve had enough. Don’t fall for the woke-con. These slimy politicians are baiting their traps for unsuspecting old timers. These paid representatives for big business and billionaires are working a con. Sucking you in with distractions and deflections from their real machinations. Throwing up smokescreens about transexuals and all things LBGTQI. They don’t care about such stuff, they just want your vote, so they can screw you to the floor, economically speaking that is.Continue Reading
