During a cost of living crisis, which many in the world are now experiencing, it is easier to get in touch with the essentials necessary for living. Food, shelter, and energy are the essential ingredients for survival in our modern worlds. The financialization of essentials by capitalism is proving to be at cross purposes for those trying to survive in a cost of living crisis. What do I mean by this? The march toward a consumer society has meant that all these basic requirements of life are things you have to buy. Few of us go out and dig up or hunt for our food these days. Putting a roof over our head is an expensive purchase in the 21C. Plus, all of our devices and vehicles run on forms of energy which we have to buy. Neoliberalism promised to make things easier and cheaper for all in this regard but has manifestly failed to do so. We were told that if governments got out of the way and let private enterprise do what it’s best at we would all be much better off. Thirty years of this, ‘the market knows best’ ethos, has placed at least a third of working Australians in dire straits when it comes to affording the basics of life. Neoliberal economic policies have failed us in every essential market.Continue Reading

Yes, it is that time of the year again, Season’s Greetings! Do you know the golden rule of present giving at Xmas? It is an undeniable truth that showering your love and generosity upon others can make you feel mighty good. The power of giving is often sold short in our economically obsessed world view. Economists don’t like ‘giving’ as a concept, it must be said, they find it simply uneconomical. It does not fit in with their strict interpretation of how markets and the world works. Neoliberalism would choke into its empty trickle down effect vessel if too much giving went on in the economy.Continue Reading

The recent nationwide Optus outage showed us that connectivity is crucial to our future security. Suddenly, everyone felt helpless and reacted with much anger and frustration toward the failing provider. This throws our dependence upon electrical and digitally connected devices into harsh relief. It is not a stretch of the imagination to plot likely scenarios during times of war in this new age of information. Cutting off the population from their institutions and from each other will be achieved via attacking communication infrastructure. This can be done far more easily than many people might think.Continue Reading

It may seem strange to talk about the secret life of money when a lot of people devote their lives to it. It’s not really when you consider the same thing has been happening around God for many millennia. Human beings have a propensity for this sort of thing, it seems. Money has a secret life because most of us do not understand what it is and how it actually works. Modern economies on the national scale are very large and complex things. Macro economics does not operate in the same manner as our own individual financial set up functions. This is why most people struggle to grasp how money and the economy as a whole really work.Continue Reading

Imagine that your parent’s or grandparent’s house was invaded by bad men and their wealth and property was stolen. In addition, they were forced to work for these marauders, as were their children, without pay. Some time later on, you find yourself walking down the street and come across that house. It has been done up with lots of improvements and manicured gardens. Ask yourself how you would feel about the situation and the owners of the property now. These are the circumstances many Black people find themselves in. The progeny of gross injustices committed not so long ago in the bigger scheme of things. The profits of slavery and the recompense owed is something we need to talk about.Continue Reading

Understanding how banks work is an eye opener for most people. Did you know that up until 1844 in Britain banks in the UK printed their own paper cash money – these were called bank notes, of course. Banks still today make their own money. Every time someone borrows money from a bank the bank extends credit by creating money in that person’s account by pushing a button. No physical money is actually created. The debt creates that money and when the loan is paid back that money ceases to exist. The banks pockets the interest charged on the loan and erases the debt. That digitally created money disappears from the system. Understanding how banks operate: Money and debt.Continue Reading

We have record low wage growth in Australia because governments have been enacting this outcome via policies specifically designed to achieve this. The Fraser and Howard governments in the 1970s and 1990s ramped up the pressure by banning industrial action by unions and attacking their membership through non-union agreements. Unions were made out to be the bad guys in continuous attacks on their character in the public eye. The Abbott and Turnbull governments created anti-union organisations like the Australian Building and Construction Commission and the Registered Organisations Commission. Coalition governments have over several decades broken the effective power and influence of the union movement. Why do we have record low wage growth in Australia? Conservatively minded government policies have designed it this way.Continue Reading
