Any sane person watching on has concern enough to be worried about Trump’s America. The very fact that this guy is still the leading GOP candidate for the 2024 presidential election is a judgement on the American people. Despots and dictators don’t rise to power without the help of the people. Everybody knows that Donald J Trump is a liar and a cheat. I mean, the guy is compulsive in both these character failings. More concerning is that he has broken the law on numerous occasions and has managed to avoid prosecution or conviction. No one voting for Trump is truly unaware of who is and how he goes about business.Continue Reading

crucifix illustration

Quite a few people, over the journey, have commented upon the Christian focus on the death of its Christ. That its iconic symbol is a cross and therefore the crucifixion of Jesus Of Nazareth takes centre stage. It has been categorised as a death cult. Especially, as it celebrates its sainted martyrs of the early church. During the Baroque period in Spain quite gruesome pictures of the crucified Christ became de riguour. This apparent revelling in the bloody and torturous demise of its central figure was undeniable. Even today, there are those who spend their lives empathising with the passion of the Christ.Continue Reading

Jesus Christ statue background

Ancient historians like Richard Carrier have cast serious doubt upon the actual historicity of Jesus Christ. There are no indisputable verifiable sources for the existence of Jesus of Nazareth. Ancient historian doubts evidence for Jesus Christ and makes solid case for the alternative. Of course, two millennia of Christianity would and does take exception to any questions about its veracity. Having studied ancient history over many years myself at university I know what Richard Carrier is talking about and the high likelihood that he may be correct in his evaluation of the situation. It is very brave of Carrier to take on the vast levels of vested interests in the whole Christian edifice. Most historians lack the courage to follow such a dangerous and financially unsupported path.Continue Reading

Poverty (Armut), (1919) by Aloys

I have been reading a detailed account of the slavery of Indigenous Indians in the Americas from the 15C onwards. They call it the ‘other slavery’ because most of us are more aware of the enslavement of Africans. The slave states in the southern states of the USA have been the focus of many books and movies. What happened to the native Indians, apart from their extermination via massacres, warfare, and disease, is less well known. The Spanish Empire was the first and most heavily involved colonial European power in the Americas and the Caribbean.Continue Reading

Killers Of The Flower Moon movie

Everybody is talking about Killers Of The Flower Moon because it is now a Hollywood movie. The book, written by David Grann, was published some 6 years ago in 2017. This is a great story and more importantly a true story. It tells us about the nature of human beings and how white people have treated those who have come before them. It is an American story involving native Americans and their displacement by European settlers. It is an American story, also, because it is about money and get rich quick schemes at any cost. It has something to say about how First Nations people were treated by white colonising powers in the creation of the New World.Continue Reading

person behind a cardboard box

Some commentators have referred to the current clime as a post-truth world. Influential leaders like Putin and Trump have spent years casting gazillions of fake news aspersions and stories into the mix to undermine the credibility of any concepts of truth.  The importance of truth has, indeed, never been greater. In an age of convenience, many people are, it seems, happy to believe whatever fits in with their world view and political persuasion. The facts don’t matter when you have a swirling mass of contradictory stuff deflecting the importance of truth.Continue Reading

Much of what we read about ourselves, as a species and collection of civilisations, praises our advanced qualities. However, if an intelligent alien were to evaluate our recorded history questions would be raised and another kind of judgement handed down. Human beings how stupid are we? Consider a few examples and see what conclusion you would come to yourself. Homo sapiens will be the representatives under the microscope for team Human in this examination. There can be no denying that our technological advancement is impressive in planet earth terms. The human species has crafted a host of labour-saving devices and communication networks to be justly proud of over the last millennia. How we treat each other and the different species we share this planet with is another story all together.Continue Reading

by Robert Hamilton   In this essay I will be critically assessing the studies of Martin Hengel, and of Richard Horsley, on the revolutionary movements in the lead up to the first Jewish revolt. I will begin by noting their similarities, that is, where their two studies agree in theirContinue Reading
