We Have Always Looked To America

In Australia, we have always looked to America for ideas and inspiration. Indeed, our business community models itself on the US via importing their CEOs and MBAs. The push from the big end of town and the LNP Coalition is, invariably, toward making this nation more like the USA. Former PM Tony Abbott tried to privatise higher education, thankfully, unsuccessfully. The Libs have wanted to kill off Medicare for some 50+ years, again, thankfully, without success. Peter Dutton, the unseated former Liberal leader of the opposition, brought out Donald Trump’s campaign director downunder to assist with the last federal election. This land of billionaires and oligarchs who boast of enormous fortunes but still pay little tax. Where the rich grow richer and under Donald Trump slash any semblance of the welfare state. A nation where members of Congress stay in power well into extreme old age. Are Americans the most selfish folk on earth? The idea of community seems an alien concept and maybe they confuse it with communism? They idolise the wealthy and the largely fraudulent narrative of the self-made man. Following the failure of the Voice to Parliament referendum for Indigenous Australians some folks are wondering why. Why wealthy white people won’t share? I mean, after all these many years why keep the boot on the throat? Why deny constitutional recognition to First Nations people? Well, it is always about money and power. It is not mere racism alone but that in combination with their pragmatic interests. Certain wealthy people, many of them involved in the mining industry did not want any more power vested in Aboriginal voices in this nation.
