There is a story about the Lincoln assassination, which, in my view, epitomises American culture. The assassin of President Abraham Lincoln was one John Wilkes Booth. Booth was an actor and, whilst not top shelf, he was well known. After shooting the President in the back of the head, while Lincoln was watching a play at the theatre, Booth made his escape. He reached a bridge on horseback, which was necessary for him to cross on his way to Maryland. The bridge was being guarded by a Union soldier, due to there being a nighttime curfew in place. The story goes that initial denials of passage were overcome in order to please the celebrity status of the stage actor. British and American plantation owners imported millions of Africans into the colonies as slave labour. That is a fact. The legacy of slavery. American Independence saw, in time, many northern states abolish slavery in their territories. Eventually, the Civil War 1861-66 was fought over the issue of slavery and the north won militarily. The result left 6 million African Americans in the United States who had been previously enslaved. The vast majority of these people were in the south. An assassin murdered President Abraham Lincoln while he was at the theatre. There had been much debate over what to do with all these former slaves. White folk in the north, whilst despising the institution of slavery in their nation, were not real keen on having all these black folk in their midst either. Gun laws are not strenuous enough in Australia. It is time to get serious about gun laws. You get folk comparing Australia with America, as if that is enough. The United States is woefully inadequate when it comes to gun laws and the safety of its citizenry. Firearms are incredibly dangerous devices making killing people easy. The onus should be on gun owners to constantly prove their fitness to hold their gun licenses. It should not be a set and forget thing. I suggest that all gun owners should have to complete constant online training and courses every 3 months. Failure to do so would see their licenses cancelled and their guns removed.Continue Reading
