Much of what President Donald Trump is doing is not new in United States’ terms. Indeed, you can categorise it as another chapter in the South vs North civil war. Remember what flags flew in the hands of the January 6 violent protesters as they broke into the Capitol. The stars and bars were proudly displayed numerous times on that day. Under Trump the South rides again. Armed militia claiming to be patriots smashed up property and bashed in the heads of police protecting Congress. The Trump revisionism of that day cannot truly hide the scars and deaths incurred on that rebellious occasion. In politics you are either moving forward or trending downward. PM Anthony Albanese, the surprise success story of the last few years, has seemingly stopped reaching for progressive momentum. Indications are that his government is more about defending the status quo than actively making things better downunder. British and American plantation owners imported millions of Africans into the colonies as slave labour. That is a fact. The legacy of slavery. American Independence saw, in time, many northern states abolish slavery in their territories. Eventually, the Civil War 1861-66 was fought over the issue of slavery and the north won militarily. The result left 6 million African Americans in the United States who had been previously enslaved. The vast majority of these people were in the south. An assassin murdered President Abraham Lincoln while he was at the theatre. There had been much debate over what to do with all these former slaves. White folk in the north, whilst despising the institution of slavery in their nation, were not real keen on having all these black folk in their midst either.
