Much of what we read about ourselves, as a species and collection of civilisations, praises our advanced qualities. However, if an intelligent alien were to evaluate our recorded history questions would be raised and another kind of judgement handed down. Human beings how stupid are we? Consider a few examples and see what conclusion you would come to yourself. Homo sapiens will be the representatives under the microscope for team Human in this examination. There can be no denying that our technological advancement is impressive in planet earth terms. The human species has crafted a host of labour-saving devices and communication networks to be justly proud of over the last millennia. How we treat each other and the different species we share this planet with is another story all together.Continue Reading

Funnily enough I am not a new Australian. I am not a mere visitor to these shores. I have lived and breathed the blessed air of this great southern land since Molly Meldrum was straight and Kent had it all together. Despite my many years wracked up on both the west and east coast of this island nation I still have a few head scratching moments. Trying to understand AFL footy is one of them when it comes to goal kicking players and why they take out their mouthguards and stuff them in their jocks or socks. How does a mouthguard impact upon the process of walking in and kicking at the goals? Could you get anything more unhygienic than placing an oral protective guard in a dirty sock or sweaty pair of underpants and then popping back in your gob?Continue Reading

Chris Scott - Coaches and The Media: AFL Sacrificial Slaughter Feeds The Fans

Sport in Australia is akin to a naked fat man in a fishbowl bending over. There is way too much scrutiny of a silly game through the lenses of multiple media channels. Talk of AFL coaches and players facing unreasonable levels of stress and pressure in their jobs is all too real. In this country, we have excessive amounts of media focused on the major football codes at the elite level. It seems, we are a nation that largely ignores the important stuff involving our state leaders and politicians but sweats on sporting minutiae.Continue Reading

Watching the North Melbourne Kangaroos play the Western Bulldogs on Good Friday answers that question – why we need relegation in AFL. Footy pundits in the media sounded off in the lead up to this game about how the Kangaroos needed to be competitive in this stand-alone Melbourne game. They urged their fans to attend this match or risk having it taken off their club. We want to see plenty of effort, the Greek chorus rang out pre-game. Well, effort was there, in my view, but the skill level displayed by Kangaroo players was appalling. Bulldog pressure, obviously, had something to do with the myriad of errors and clangers committed by the young North Melbourne team.Continue Reading

We are all born into this life without our consent. Nobody asks us whether we would like to play the game of life in human form. Observing the unfocused gaze of a newborn babe one witnesses a magical tabula rasa moment. Consciousness is, it seems, at its earliest manifestation, the state of the watcher. A baby observes via its eyes and visual sensory apparatus within the brain. We, as human beings are made up of many trillions of human cells. There are 200 different types of cells within the body and none of these are individually conscious or sentient. Consciousness: Free will and cellular facts tell a story that is wildly divergent from the narratives derived from religion and lore.Continue Reading

The tide is turning against the current Australian Government, as women march against sexual abuse and violence in this nation. The Liberal National Party coalition is recognisable by its lack of gender equality in terms of membership and parliamentary representation. In fact, some male members of the federal government boast about their gender superiority via naming themselves the Big Swinging Dicks. These fellows actively blocked by the leadership aspirations of female parliamentarians like the recently retired Julia Bishop. The alleged rape of Brittany Higgins in the office of the Defence Minister at Parliament House in Canberra in 2019 and the subsequent cover-up has blown the whistle on a culture of sexual abuse in the highest realm in Australia. Big Swinging Dicks bringing down government.Continue Reading

In Australia, we have just completed a Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. Some people were shocked at the findings, which emerged out of this enquiry. More than 10, 500 submissions and the testimony of 600 witnesses were considered during the two years it ran. Elderly Australians have been abused, drugged into submission and treated abhorrently according to the evidence provided to the commission. The rights of those in aged care have been sorely neglected and transgressed over many decades here in Australia within the current federally run system. It is time to ask ourselves why we abuse the elderly and why we allow this abuse to go on unchecked despite countless reviews into the current system for aged care?Continue Reading

Watching the cricket over the summer holidays is a well-trodden Australian tradition. Now, into the back half of my fifth decade I have indulged in this safe past time during the pandemic. “I don’t like cricket,” so the song goes, but unlike 10CC I don’t love it and never have. Therefore, I offer a fresh perspective on this televised game and test of patience. Test cricket, according to the purists, is the true format of the game loved by a billion Indians. Here is a brief review of an Australian summer of cricket on the box.Continue Reading

The footy is back on and don’t we love it? The return of AFL to our TV sets, albeit in quieter stadiums, has been welcomed by most of us around the nation. The lack of fans at the footy has left a void into which the game’s commentators have volubly attempted to fill. This viewer is tired of being loudly lectured at by ex-players paid to become instant experts on strategy and everything else under the sun. I watch the game to enjoy the skills and contest on display. The players, generally, give their all in fierce performances on behalf of their teams. Sports commentators on Australian TV, and in the AFL in particular, seek to verbally fill every second with the sound of their own loud voices. I am sick of the incessant commentary and opinion giving, which is detracting from the spectacle of the game itself. AFL Commentary: Let the game speak for itself in the wonderful athletic performance of the players.Continue Reading

I must confess to an irrational dislike of dentists and all things dental prior to writing this post. I know that it is probably unfair to hold such feelings toward a valuable part of our society and that they most likely deserve better, but there it is. Therefore, when advisingContinue Reading
